Pure is a game thatâ€s come leaping over a muddy hill from out of
nowhere. Itâ€s really no surprise that itâ€s caused little stir.
Gamers just donâ€t expect much from a dirt bike game from Disney. It
just doesnâ€t sound like the next big thing, does it? Well, funnily
enough, it just might be.

There are many different types of racing game, some so different they
shouldnâ€t even be in the same genre category. A driving sim like
Forza Motorsport has little in common with an arcade racer like
Burnout, but ultimately in each case you steer cars faster than the
next bloke in order to hit the finish line first. In many ways Forza
has more in common with a flight simulator and Burnout has in common
with a cart racer. The best comparison you could make with Pure would
be to a snowboarding game like SSX Tricky. The game itself has you take
control of an off-road quad bike and fling yourself around in it in,
racing scenarios the developer has naturally described as being akin to
riding a dirty rollercoaster. The team has done a brilliant job of
bringing you an experience exactly like that, where massive leaps,
twists and death-defying drops replace wheels cruising on tarmac and
comfortably controlled steering.

Despite being a Disney title, Pure was in fact developed by their newly
bought studio, Black Rock, previously responsible for the MotoGP and
ATV Offroad Fury series. These people know a fair bit about speed, mud
and getting air and itâ€s all come together in what theyâ€ll be
calling their magnum opus for years to come. The game is absolute fun
from the very first moment of play. The perfect balance of speed,
control, brilliant tracks with amazing leaps and easy use of trick
buttons mean you have a constant sense of achievement (but with plenty
of scope for challenging play if you want it). Youâ€ll race against a
huge gang of riders, picking your own avatar and either preset bikes or
ones youâ€ve custom-made. As you approach one of the incredibly steep
hills, pull back on the left stick, push it forward as you reach the
edge and launch into the air. Once up there youâ€ll use the A button
and a direction to do a trick which youâ€ll have to finish before your
wheels touch down again, and fill up a dual-purpose meter. You can
either use the gauge to boost your speed or hang on to it until it
fills past a certain point making better tricks available on the B
button. Rinse and repeat and youâ€ll open up the Y button tricks;
itâ€s pretty simple to play but thatâ€s whatâ€s clever about it.

There are three modes of play – Race, Sprint is faster with shorter
laps and requires quicker reflexes to take the win, whilst Freestyle is
your chance to really show off your moves where youâ€ll have to keep
doing tricks and picking up gas refills in a game of survival. Reach
the finishing line and your gas will be topped up so you can keep going
until eventually you mess up the management of tricking and boosting
(and run out of fuel). The modes are all pretty easy to get the hang of
and only really shift the focus slightly to give you the choice of
doing what you enjoy most. This mix, along with seven different
locations with brilliantly thought out tracks that utilise multiple
routes and a nice career mode, is more than enough to keep you playing
for weeks.

Youâ€ll also get the chance to spend some time in the garage creating
your own quad bike, and the level of customisation available here is
and Freestyle. Race is very straightforward, Sprint very impressive.
Youâ€ll hand pick every single component of your bike and the
inclusion of many parts that are just for aesthetic value adds a lot of
fun to this. If you are a bit fearful of tuning you can always get help
from the game with a press of a button at any time, picking the best
component for your ride automatically. And when you arenâ€t creating
bikes or playing in career mode you can get yourself on Live with up to
16 players for some epic races.

This is a game balanced to perfection. Itâ€s fun and itâ€s simple,
but it also has a fair amount of depth. The controls and the gameâ€s
generosity with steering means that you are never frustrated, but
always have the chance to really push yourself by pulling off one
spectacular move after another. This is the baby bearâ€s porridge of
racers, so take a spoon and dig in.
